What is N-acetylcysteine (NAC) eye drops and what are they used for?
A dog's eye is a sophisticated system where the lens plays a crucial role: its job is to focus light directly onto the retina , which then sends images to the brain. When cataracts develop, this lens becomes cloudy, blocking light and causing vision loss that can eventually lead to blindness.
Main uses in veterinary medicine
NAC (N-acetylcysteine) eye drops are a fundamental tool in pet ophthalmology, standing out in two areas:
- Treatment of corneal ulcers: This is the main use in dogs and cats to repair damage to the surface of the eye.
- Cataract control: It is frequently used in older dogs to slow down the opacity of the lens, improving their quality of life and visual clarity.
The success of this treatment depends entirely on the frequency , since the enzymes that damage the eye act very quickly.
- Pre-cleaning: If the eye has secretions (eye crust), gently clean it with gauze and saline solution before applying the drop.
- Dosage: The usual regimen is 1 drop every 4 to 6 hours (depending on the severity of the ulcer). In critical cases ("melting"), the veterinarian may recommend applications every 1 or 2 hours during the first day.
- Technique: Hold your pet's head firmly but calmly. Lift the upper eyelid and let the drop fall without the dropper touching the eye (to avoid contaminating the bottle).
- Order of application: If you use other eye drops (such as antibiotics), wait at least 5 to 10 minutes between each one so that they do not "wash each other away".
